Nový Opatov: Finally, the Heart of Jižní Město

It has the same population as Olomouc, yet for half a century it has lacked a downtown area where people could meet, socialize, shop, and work. Jižní Město, the largest housing estate in the Czech Republic, tells a story of a debt owed to its residents, but also of a better future.

A new, modern urban center is taking shape around the Opatov metro station. A place where, in a few years, it will be great to live. A place that will be alive day and night. A place with potential. A place that owes it to itself, because it should have been here 50 years ago.

Originally, the creators of “Jižák” wanted to build beautiful, modern cities. They were inspired by Le Corbusier, the Swiss architect who advocated for simple, functional, and sun-drenched developments.
