Prague's "Jižák" Will Finally Be Completed in Opatov
The urban layout of the “Nový Opatov” project by Studio acht builds on the original plans for the development of Prague’s Jižní Město district from the 1960s, when the center was planned to be located directly next to the Metro Line C station. This project was never completed, which has had a negative impact on the condition of the area.
A new square featuring commercial and office spaces, apartment buildings, and a new city park will be built on the site of the current neglected brownfield. Specific plans to expand the built-up area of the capital city of Prague toward the southeast date back to the mid-1960s, when a new master plan was approved. Based on this plan, a public urban planning competition for Jižní Město was announced, with the second round completed in 1967. Under the leadership of architects Krásný and Lasovský, a detailed zoning plan for Jižní Město was subsequently drawn up in 1968.
The original plan envisaged a diverse mix of functions intended to ensure a varied use of the area. Individual locations were designed with a gradation of building volumes, with high-rise structures always positioned at their focal points. From the very beginning, the plan called for building heights to increase gradually in those development centers where the Opatov and Háje metro stations on Line “C” were later built.
